Only the most persistent (or skilled) players will uncover all of the mysteries of Returnal, and even then, they might find themselves scratching their heads. Yet another in a long line of roguelikes, this game is ultimately a pastiche of clear influences. It has polish and graphical fidelity approaching something like Control but features the brutal difficulty of the bullet-hell/roguelike hybrid that it is. This results in a game that’s intriguing and satisfying to explore while savagely punishing you for doing so. This dynamic absolutely isn’t for everyone, which raises the tired question of whether it needs to be.
