Reigns drew me in immediately with its premise. The idea of ruling a kingdom through binary choices was captivating. However, its simplicity creates a sense of false equivalency. Reigns relegate atrocities such as slavery and genocide to the same level of importance as to whether an artist should create a painting. Institutions that have murdered and tortured people for centuries are just cards to swipe. Instead of grappling with the complexities of power, Reigns comforts the player by minimizing the severity of these choices. It references atrocities for entertainment, but Reigns does not have the respect to engage with them.
