Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland was doomed from the start. Neversoft tried to cram a vast, interconnected Los Angeles onto the aging PS2. The result is an LA that feels like a series of empty movie sets connected by narrow tunnels. The story mode spends so long at the tutorial that it never gets to be interesting, and the humoristic attempts have aged like milk. Still, the skating is more expressive than ever, and the California punk-infused soundtrack is one of the best in gaming. It isn’t the best THPS game, but it has style, and sometimes, that’s all you need.
